The winter of 2024 will once again be an extreme challenge for many people in Ukraine. The Russian war has plunged the country into an energy crisis that threatens the elderly, families with children and patients in hospitals in particular. In cities such as Kharkiv and Kherson, the constant shelling of the energy infrastructure is leading to long power cuts. Kharkiv, one of the worst affected cities, was already without electricity and water for days in August, leaving over a million people without water. This means that families in high-rise buildings have to hold out for hours in the freezing cold, as the elevators are also out of action. Elderly people and young children in particular suffer under these conditions, as they are often trapped on the upper floors. The situation is even more dramatic in smaller towns and rural areas, which have hardly any access to stable energy sources. People there often have to rely on improvised heating systems, which are not enough to survive the temperatures of up to -25°C. In addition, hospitals are unable to carry out vital operations or care for babies in incubators without generators. Life-saving systems break down in hospitals. Generators are not enough to care for all patients and doctors have to watch helplessly as they work without electricity. In smaller towns and villages, the situation is often even more desperate. There is hardly any functioning energy infrastructure left, and people are struggling against the cold with the bare essentials. The constant attacks on the energy supply have destroyed the already fragile infrastructure In Kherson, the most recent attack also destroyed the few functioning power lines. Many people had to survive the cold winter morning without any heating or electricity, while emergency teams tried to repair the bare essentials. But there is a constant risk of new attacks that could undo any progress.
Now is the time to act! Without power generators, the winter of 2024 will be life-threatening for many people in Ukraine. You can help by supporting us to deliver urgently needed generators and heaters. Every donation brings light, warmth and hope to homes, hospitals and emergency shelters.
Your donation saves lives. Together we can stand by these people in their darkest hour and ensure that they survive the winter.
The donation target
We cannot directly specify the donation target here, as an electricity generator with an approximate output of 20KW costs around 6,000 euros. However, we can define the need as we collect donations for the following cities:
- Kharkiv
- Kherson
- Dnipro
- Zaporizhzhya
- Krywyj Rih
The power supply in several Ukrainian cities remains extremely strained due to the ongoing war and targeted attacks on the energy infrastructure. The upcoming winter of 2024 poses enormous challenges for the population. In Kharkiv, the energy infrastructure was severely damaged by heavy rocket attacks. Around 200,000 households are without electricity and repairs will not be sufficiently possible.
The situation remains precarious, especially with the impending cold temperatures. Dnipro has also been hit by attacks on energy facilities. The city remains vulnerable, as new attacks on nearby facilities are possible at any time
In Zaporizhzhya, power outages are recurring as energy infrastructure continues to be regularly hit by Russian attacks. Although emergency teams are working around the clock, the power supply in the city is extremely unstable and people are preparing for prolonged outages. Kryvyi Rih has also suffered severe damage from attacks on the power infrastructure, with most of the power supply unable to be restored
These cities are all facing a harsh winter in which the supply of electricity generators and heating sources will be essential for survival. Especially in hospitals and emergency shelters, generators are essential to help people during this critical time.
