The current situation in Ukraine is devastating and has catastrophic consequences for children and young people in particular. The ongoing conflicts and the targeted forced deportations to Russia have led to serious trauma for these young people. They have often witnessed or been victims of extreme violence, sexual assault and systematic indoctrination. Their mental health is severely affected by these terrible experiences and their identity is often torn away from them. These children and young people have to come to terms with the shocking truth that they have been told that their homeland, Ukraine, no longer exists. They have been taught directly or indirectly that their parents do not want them back.
These statements reinforce the traumas and leave deep, invisible scars that weigh heavily on both the children and their parents. Without appropriate therapeutic and psychological support, the road to healing is long and arduous. Latent psychological care, which is urgently needed, can lay the foundations for a healthy future for these children and young people. With this in mind, the ComeHome Association, together with local partner organizations, has decided to set up safe and secure care centers in Ukraine.
These centers are intended to provide a protected space in which children and young people can receive the psychological support they need to deal with their experiences. Through targeted therapies and psychological support, they can find ways to overcome their traumas and reintegrate into a healthy social structure. The establishment of such care centers is an urgent undertaking that can only be realized through generous donations and active support. Together, we can give Ukrainian children and young people a chance to overcome their traumatic experiences and build a better future.
